i keep starting to write out very fascinating details here about what i did "last week," and then get bored and stop writing and forget all about it. these broken sentences detailing shows and dinners and late nights and new songs i like never make it beyond a draft. BUT NOT THIS TIME my lil readers. i just watched factory girl and am feeling a little bit boring compared to edie sedgwick. i will solve that by typing out things i've done on my blog! YES. that is just as interesting.
well, i did go to the hotel chelsea last week. how factory-era is THAT?! in your face non-sedgwick-esque lifestyle! so i went up to the hotel chelsea to do a piece on john vanderslice for gothamist. he's doing a "blog tour", so instead of stopping at cities worldwide, he's reaching them via the world wide web. it's very modern! i had very little time to figure out where we would shoot this song - but instantly thought of the roof of the hotel.
i had been there about a month before to interview stanley bard, get a little tour of the place from him, and talk to some residents. the building is amazing -- with so many rooms, pieces of artwork, history, people, ghosts and...the roof. i often declare places my "happy place," but i swear...this is the real deal (don't tell the others). it's really indescribable. a vast wonderland of layers and levels, something you'd think could only be constructed in a dream. plants and houses live and grow up there, way above the city -- it should have it's own zip code.
so there we were, john singing as the sun set over a hotel that's been standing there for 124 years. it was so perfect that the word perfect isn't even perfect enough to describe it. you can watch the video here, though it's nothing like being on top of that place.
elsewhere: jake was there that day too, exploring and taking photos with a friend (who took the picture above).
