so last week i walked in to my local coffee shop (i haven't had caffeine - um, non-sparks caffeine - since this minor relapse. but i do decaf still).
this particular joint, which makes the world's most amazing cup o' decaf americano, is normally playing some andrew bird or some wilco on the stereo. however, on this particular morning "the new guy" had taken the task of serving up the sonic treats. from what i gathered he was trying to convince his co-worker, "cool accent guy," that phish was good. how, may you ask, was he doing this? i could tell you how he was not doing it: correctly! "new guy" was playing the stale studio version of "free". yep, "new phish". just as "new math" and "new coke" failed, so did "new phish". watch out "new guy," you may go the way of max beberman.
when he saw his co-worker was focusing more intently on making my decaf, he turned to me (possibly sensing my hippie-ness) and said, "doesn't trey KNOW HOW TO BRING THE FUNK?!" i smiled. he turned back to his co-worker and said, "dude, TREY CAN BRING THE FUNK. just LISTEN!" perhaps realizing his co-worker could kick his ass, he quickly apologized for snapping at him.
a few days later, "new guy" was working again and this time he was with "newer girl," thus giving him total control of the music for the entire shift. i imagine prior to opening he pulled her aside to tell her that only seasoned employees were allowed to touch the stereo. "maybe one day, when you're ready, you will be able to choose the music," he probably said, "but for now, get ready for trey to bring the funk. all. day. long." what was he playing when i walked in? something older, something live, i think it was a cover...but i was tired and forgot upon leaving. however, the two people in front of me in line were bobbing their heads, without a hint of irony. i felt like i was back in burlington for a brief moment. thanks "new guy," you're alright. (but if i ever hear a trey solo album in there...i'm going to have to ask to speak to the manager.)
gettin_jiggy_wit_it.mp3 - phish (7:31 minute live cover of the will smith song, incl. vacuum solo)
i found that photo via google image search. i'm guessing "new guy" took it one day at the beach, before he had to start working for The Man.

We're going to have to pull you away from the Dark Side. Again. I'm going to hijack your iPod and replace all your Phish with Daft Punk.
