a little while ago i decided i wouldn't post anything mean about bands anymore. people just have different opinions and tastes about music. why waste my time on writing out a bunch of sentences that basically trash a band and the music that they create?
so i really am going to try to stick to that. but i must say this, what is the appeal behind birdmonster? aside from their nice t-shirts. to me, they came off as a pretty "eh" band. nothing to offer to my already sonically cluttered ears and mind. their banter and music was all very polished and mtv-esque (i could see them playing the vma's next year). and really...a steve irwin joke? too soon birdmonster, too soon!
the band totally gave 100% tonight at their merc show, but i was still bored. in my opinion, they were just overly, and non-personally, energetic. rehearsed, even, and not in a good way. but i am a child of "grunge" and old classics that my dad played out in the garage on his stereo when i was little. led zepellin, the beatles, bob dylan. so i like my music a little rough around the edges. to make an obscure reference that probably i will only get at this wee hour of the morn'...real gold is gold, fool's gold is...you know where this is going. (but get it?! i'm referring to rocks as a symbol for rock n' roll. no? didn't work? okay.)
IN CONCLUSION, i will keep my mouth shut from here on out, but i will say that i totally agree with pitchfork on this one.
i saw them the knit's tap room a while back. thought they were pretty good. the album is good. not great. good. i wouldn't say either the live show or album is polished. i hear a lot more diy than i hear bob rock.
maybe rehearsed is a better word for the band than polished? after being disappointed by one buzz band after another, i'll gladly take a rehearsed band right about now.

Album's O.K., but I had fun when they came through a couple months back. Their set was too short to get boring, there was lots of energy, and they genuinely seemed to be enjoying the rocking of things out. It probably helped that they surprised their #1 fan by dragging her on stage, handing her a tambourine and letting her just go off.
A solid 35-minutes. And I'd rather have a fun disposable rock band than another tiresome, disposable post-punk outfit.

Yeah, I was more excited when I had 3-4 tracks to appreciate. Live, they try but there's something missing.
