i finally received the official version of the snowden album (anti-anti) last week. the artwork is beautiful and the songs are all truly amazing. this band has always had it in them, and now everyone else who hasn't seen/heard it before, will. every sonic bit of greatness that has shined through at every show i've seen them play for the past few years, comes through on every note in this album. it's hard to even pick a single song from it to post here. this is one of those albums you want to listen to from beginning to end, something i did repeatedly this weekend.

on the road with cloud cult

(jitterbug perfume was pretty much responsible for getting me in to more contemporary literature in college. i was an english lit major, and read "the classics" only, please. until tom robbins came along. i went back to the classics after whipping through all of his books, which i revisit frequently. they're a fascinating place to visit, i highly recommend it!)

now i just need somplace to wear it

last night i went to "favorite expensive clothing store" for the first time in a long time. i was talking to my dad on the walk over and he asked what i was doing. i prefaced my destination by saying i now had a (freelance) job, so i could afford such things as shopping at overpriced clothing stores. i can't really, but i'm a terrific rationalizer - my skills at this are responsible for the entire jeans section of my wardrobe.

so i entered the store and immediately eyed some things i wanted to try on. upon picking them up, however, i realized even i wasn't good enough at rationalizing the purchase of an $88 t-shirt. i headed to the sale section, and there she was. the most beautiful dress i had ever seen. i half closed my eyes as i felt around for the price tag ("please don't be over $100, please don't be over $100").

$149. (pause) i'll just put down a few of these other things and not take cabs again and make my lunch for the rest of the week. that will even things out. perfect.

i was so excited i did that thing where i take pictures in the dressing room.

my (more fashionable) roommate informed me that my new dress was by surfer dude turned designer, tracy feith! i could go on and on about how obsessed i am with surfing/surfboards/surf culture/surf for a while, and how therefore this dress was destinted to be mine, but that's a story for another day. for now, i ask you, how could you not love this man?

swf seeks tattooed physicist

recently i was asked by forbes.com to represent the "new york city singles/dating scene". or something. which, if you know me, is funny. since i seem to have a knack for exclusively dating guys who are exclusively dating other girls.

so, here are my jaded single new yorker answers to their questions. i'll also list them here, as they didn't use all of them:

How would you describe the general atmosphere of the singles scene in New York? I think the scene must vary from neighborhood to neighborhood. Where I live, in the Lower East Side, I generally get the idea that there isn't so much a "singles scene" as there is a "scene" in general. I think a good blanket term that could cover the entire cities singles scene however, would be that it's harsh. Or maybe competitive. I'm pretty sure that even the guys with the girlfriends are also dating other people.

If you were giving a friend advice on the perfect New York date, where would you suggest that they go, and what would you tell them to do?
The best dates are sort of unplanned. If I had to formulate something, I'd say you can't go wrong with a show at Joe's Pub. Dinner, wine, intimate setting, great atmosphere and music. That's a pretty solid foundation.

How does New York stack up against other cities in terms of its beautiful people? What's that scene like?
I heard there are very beautiful people in the Meatpacking District, but that may very well be an urban myth. I think there's a saying in the below 14th Street crowd that goes something like "the ugly people try to look cute, and the cute people try to look ugly." [ed. note: totally stole that line from the burg]

I'd imagine the "beautiful people scene" that you are referring to however, is very much like an episode of "Sex and the City".

Where are the great pickup spots in the city?
The F train. [ed. note: this answer is so three years ago]

Do you think online dating is big in New York?
I think so. There used to be a stigma attached to online dating, people didn't want to do it, and if they did - they didn't want to talk about it. These days everyone seems to be meeting people online.
We live in this MySpace.com era, where everyone has an online profile of some sort. There are also sites like Consumating.com - I personally know a lot of people who use that site - and it's a great way to meet new people in cities. Just the other day I searched for guys who were tagged with "tattooed" and "physicist" in a 10 mile radius. You just can't do that stuff in "real life".

i would recap my weekend here, however:

a) it wasn't that exciting.

b) you don't care.

c) i was told not to be too personal on this site by multiple friends. i don't know why.

so here's what's going on in some friends lives. i will capatalize the important parts for emphasis:

1. janelle has a NEW blog! old. NEW.

2. ghostland observatory is playing lollapalooza this year! LOLLAPALOOZA!

3. the cloud room is out on tour with muse right now. MUSE! j has reported that it's 120 degrees in arizona. 120 DEGREES! they're in denver tonight, hopefully it's cooler.

two things i enjoyed this weekend: my roof (view, above). and making eye contact with chuck klosterman at a friends birthday party. even if he was just looking past me and at someone else. or checking out the line at the open bar. a girl can dream. (it's likely that this is why my friends tell me not to be too personal on this site.)
