Movable Hype 8.0 is just around the corner. We've been rethinking how to book these shows. All New York bands? All smaller bands, and more of them? Combination of both? Or keep it at 3 supporters and one headliner. While we think about it, here are the details we have so far for this next one:

Movable Hype 8.0 on July 11th
at the Knitting Factory (main space)
with Takka Takka, Femme Generation, Goes Cube

More details to be announced. Including the headliner, or 3 more smaller bands! It's all in the works... In the meantime, give the bands a listen:

tomorrow i am MOVING. which means that right now i am in the middle of a pile of possessions, questioning my need for any of them. do i need a glass jar that holds scented oil and wooden sticks that apparently soak up said oil and make my room smell nice? probably not. but i'm packing it anyway! what is wrong with me.

once i had a handmade wall mural when i lived in burlington, vermont. it was of jerry holding a dancing bears hand. yeah. i'm not kidding. since the new roommate probably wouldn't allow something like that anywhere in the apartment (and also because i am not quite the hippie i used to be), i have procured the wall mural i debated getting last year. also known as the "morning forest wall mural". also known as "the thing that will make it seem like i am living in a giant bob ross painting" and/or "the thing that will make it seem like i am living in the forest. in the morning." ahhhhh, so relaxing. it is currently just blocks away at my new place waiting to be attached to my bedroom wall.

so my new place comes fully assembled with a new roommate! if you read this blog, you probably read her blog. i'm so excited! though i will be moving away from the only roommate i've lived with for the past two years, and our cats! and the 5th floor! (though this will keep it's name.)

here's the only song i could find that had the word "movin" in it on my itunes, that wasn't billy joel's "movin' out". i don't know why i have it. this song is very very...not good:

last night i headed over to the hook, in red hook, with some friends to see broken social scene (they were playing a private party for tag team). not that i need constant reminders, but, this was one of the nights that reminded me of how much i love new york, life, music and, of course, free stuff (which last night included, but was not limited to: blueberry beer, brie and watermelon).

broken social scene was amazing. they didn't play this one, but this is one of my favorite songs of theirs:

bravo silva has a residency coming up at pianos in july (check out their new song on myspace, it's my favorite of theirs and i'm so glad they recorded it!). the last night of the residency, july 19th, raising the fawn is playing. this is john crossingham, from broken social scenes, other band. they played movable hype last year. now they have a new album coming out, but this is my favorite song from their last one:

the shiloh song

it was bound to happen, and when it did - i was pretty certain i knew who would be behind it. i woke up this morning to find this note in my inbox from my far away friends on the west coast, sent directly after an mp3 of a song about the jolie-pitt superbaby. here's the note:

the burg

i LOVE this show. i don't care if it's just another attack on "hipsters". hipsters sort of deserve to be attacked, especially if they refer to themselves as "hipsters". anyway, it's FUNNY.

i first heard of it because they wanted to feature bravo silva in the first episode (which they did, and you can watch it here!) favorite part: at the end they're at the asterisk show that bravo silva played last month - dialogue...

guy: "god! they were supposed to go on an hour ago. fuckin' arrogant dicks*, i hate this band."

girl: "you love this band, you've been to every show they've ever done. ever."

actually, i think my favorite part is when one of the characters is on his laptop checking out brooklynvegan.com

news from the 5th floor

for some crazy reason, 5th floor is just all abuzz today - so i thought i'd give you some unsolicited news about what's going on up here:

1. my favorite scotsman, darren, has been working hard over in glasgow to redesign the 5th floor site. it's not quite done, but here's a preview...

2. slowlands is playing mercury lounge tomorrow night (6/24). they go on at 8:30, and the rest of the lineup is great too (rahim, the plastic constellations and the isles). so set up camp at merc tomorrow night.

3. bravo silva will be taking residency at pianos this july. every wednesday night you'll be able to catch them with some other great bands. we've been working on the lineups, and they're almost all set - i'll post them here soon.

seen, heard

i have about 5 or so posts sitting in typepad purgatory right now. not sure what to do with them. what does one write about after seeing radiohead AND the best commercial ever? there's really nothing left. but i'll take a shot at delving deeper in to the former. words don't really do it justice, but this is from my column for the villager:

Scene and Heard

For the past month or so, I’ve been living a seemingly normal life from the exterior – but inside, there’s been a giant clock ticking, counting down in anxious beats to June 13th, 2006. Finally, the ticking clock turned in to a metronome as I stood in a sporadically lit theater, excited hushing and yelping echoing around me as the opening notes to “You And Whose Army?” were played. Radiohead began their set.

I was about 15 feet from the stage, watching the only band I’ll ever call “my favorite band” (such a simplistic turn of phrase doesn’t do them justice), in a relatively small Theater at Madison Square Garden. So much to take in, and every sense soaking it up. Thom Yorke’s voice bringing me to a familiar place that I’ve visited quite often yet have never heard quite so clearly. Lester Bangs once referred to sounds heard during an “insomniac postmidnight,” and for whatever reason I recalled this term on that night, even though time was standing still and midnight didn’t exist. I was awoken from my trance by two older men who, if I had anything to do with it, would never have been allowed to purchase tickets to such an experience. The two were drunk, loud and clearly unappreciative of what they had somehow become a part of, and yet, on this night, even they couldn’t ruin my mood. Not even after they spilled their over-priced vodka tonics on my jeans. Not even after they “accidentally” groped my...unmentionables. Nope, I would shift my body and block them out.

At least I didn’t have one of the Bush twins in my sight line. Thom Yorke, outspoken on his dislike for their father, wrote about their appearance at the next night’s show on his blog. He wondered if he should “object belatedly on moral grounds” to their presence, or simply “shut up and smile.” Ultimately, no matter how much he would have rather done the former, he ignored them, just as I ignored those aforementioned grabby, drunk distractions.

If I had more space, I would certainly write more about this band. However, there is a new clock ticking — and one must move on.

karen's post, linked to above, has more info. including this flickr set - which proves the commercial isn't computer generated. there were actually 250,000 superballs! and a hill! i don't care about high risk factor for injury, this is somehow being incorporated into my future wedding. whenever that happens. there will be superballs. and a song blasting to their unchoreographed bouncing.

returning to space camp

last friday, over sushi and happy hour drinks, the movie "space camp" came up in conversation. i forget why, but the important part here is that my dinner companion lost a bet and now has to buy the movie on dvd so that we may watch it.

actually, in this case, no one is really a "loser" because who wouldn't want to watch, never-the-less OWN, that movie?!

today i was checking out "space camp" on wikipedia and made a startling discovery. joaquin phoenix (who plays "max" in the movie) changed his name for a brief period of time to leaf phoenix. he then changed it back. during "space camp" he was going by leaf. this isn't the startling discovery, i always knew about leaf phoenix, i just had no idea they were one in the same. the other day i was rewatching "walk the line" and i thought to myself, "what ever happened to that leaf phoenix?"

mind. blown.

and remember kevin? he only went to space camp after his dad bought him a jeep. well that's none other than jimmy cooper from the oc!

anyway, at dinner we wondered if "space camp" was going to be just as awesome as when we first saw it in 1986. there are some movies, like "the goonies" and "charlie and the chocolate factory", that remain great throughout the years, throughout different ages. i feel like "space camp" is a combination of those movies - except add a robot (remember jinx!) to the equation. ergo, it will still be awesome.
