last night i was writing a post when my wifi went down and...i lost it. but don't worry, it wasn't very good anyway. the bottom line was that after a long, exhausting weekend i still managed to drag myself out on sunday night to go see the national.
they are excellent. better every time i see them. and they fit well with webster hall. their sound with the atmosphere of the place fit. sometimes it works out like that. they commented on the venue change with something along the lines of, "this show was supposed to be at bowery, now it's here - and we don't care. it was also supposed to be for charity, and now it's not..."
anyway, i interviewed aaron last week for the villager. you can read that here.
recently a friend explained to me that the lyrics from their song city middle:
I think I'm like Tennessee Williams
I wait for the click
I wait, but it doesn't kick in
...is a reference to "cat on a hot tin roof" in which the character brick pollitt (at right played by paul newman) says he wants to drink til he feels the click. after a long weekend of drinking, i thought it was kind of sad that i knew what that meant. knew what that felt like. but i won't overthink that.
there was no way i was feeling that kind of click sunday night anyway, with bud lights costing NINE DOLLARS. and i can get that same feeling from music.

I was going to touch on 'the click' if I ever got around to chiming in, but now I can just keep on slackin'. What you said, plus the photo of Newman. I too thought the sound was grrrreat from my spot. Rich tone and the violin came through loud and clear.
Oh, yeah, then after saying how it was no longer for charity, he added that each band member was going to be receiving their own personal slave after the show. Every band has to make some compromises when they start to break through.

I thought they were terrific as usual. As far as the acoustics at Webster, most of it sounded great, but at times the low register from the bass, etc. came across very buzzy. Can't really complain though; Matt's vocals sounded amazing. Some pics and a brief review here.
