did you know that the raconteurs are called the saboteurs in australia?
i had no idea. so when someone from a distribution company from overseas contacted me about 5th floor stuff, and included this at the bottom of their email:
The Saboteurs feature the heavyweight talents of Jack White (White Stripes) and Brendan Benson. Their album 'Broken Boy Soldiers' which is gaining massive media attention and featuring the hit single 'Steady as She Goes' is already destined to be one of THE albums of the year.
i was all...is this guy trying to scam me or something? when everything was clarified i had only one question remaining. and it was rhetorical. "THE album of the year?! seriously?"

i'm still counting my pennies, saving up for my third tattoo. i'm really really itching to get it. i want it, like, rightnow. and for the past 2.5 hours i've been watching inked on tlc. it is not helping. i know exactly what i want, i just need to get it out of my head and on to the skin. it'll likely be a quarter sleeve...that goes over my shoulder and on to my back a little bit.
anyway, during the end of hour 2 of the inked marathon, a physicist came in to the shop and got the schrödinger equation tattooed on his arm! that's the fundamental equation of physics for describing quantum mechanical behavior. it was hot.
i've also been wondering for a while now why i didn't become a tattoo artist. i'm sort of obsessed with the idea of working in a shop, even on an administrative level, and maybe finding a good apprenticeship. which from what i hear is really hard to find.
i was going to post the song tattoo by petra haden here, but it's an m4p - which isn't going to do much for anyone.

a nice company filmed the entire movable hype 7.0 show for me. i've mentioned this before. the footage is all slowly filtering in - and currently you can see "chemicals collide" performed by cloud cult that night, on youtube.
related/reminder: ryspace has an mp3 of the same song (and others) from that night.

stay tuned for news on the two upcoming summer movable hypes!

i'm not that into sports. i grew up playing them, and i went to lots of yankees games. but that was all more of a result from having an older brother who i emulated and wanted to copy when i was little.
however, i am to this day totally obsessed with the world cup. we weren't a soccer family, but at some point along the line i got into the game. in college i practiced with the men's soccer team from time to time. i sucked. but i was determined to learn how to do a rainbow kick (the incredible amount of determination probably had something to do with being stoned). and for the last world cup in 2002 i watched almost every game. i would come in to work early (at like 5am) and watch the games with my boss. i declared i was "totally going to germany in 2006". my family is from bremerhaven and i saw it as a way to visit my roots and also experience live world cup craziness.
truth is, i think i'd have more fun watching the games on tv. and i have to actually learn german before visiting anyway. i refuse to visit a foreign land without learning the language - at least a bit. i used to speak german a little when i was young, but i lost it. losing a second language is no good. so i'm determined to (re)learn it (i probably only knew five phrases anyway).
anyway, i just got this email - which is why i even wrote this post:
Experience the World Cup the German way @ Zum Schneider, with German beers, food and hospitality.Zum Schneider, the renowned "indoor beergarden" on Avenue C and 7th Street in the East Village, is extending German hospitality to all New Yorkers who want to see the World Cup live.
Every game of the World Cup will be shown live on 4 TV's and one projector screen. Free admission for all non-Germany games.
i think i might go watch some games there. and i think there are maybe two people who read this blog that actually watch sports. i'm sorry, i'll post about music soon! sunset rubdown, beirut, something something wolf something, the walkmen, park park forever,el mad mo. omg i love music.

today i got one of those blatant promotional emails - declaring an mp3 has leaked from a new album that isn't yet released (label to blogger: post it on your blog!) but i decided to post it anyway, you know why - because it's from meat loaf's new album! and he used to drive me home from softball practice, so i'm posting it.
you can listen to his new song, monster's loose, on his myspace!
it's very different from his old stuff, but still pretty theatrical. and yes, the new album is called bat out of hell III.
this just in!: "On
tonight’s American Idol Meatloaf will pair up with American Idol
sweetheart, Katharine McPhee for what is sure to be a very moving duet."

last night i was writing a post when my wifi went down and...i lost it. but don't worry, it wasn't very good anyway. the bottom line was that after a long, exhausting weekend i still managed to drag myself out on sunday night to go see the national.
they are excellent. better every time i see them. and they fit well with webster hall. their sound with the atmosphere of the place fit. sometimes it works out like that. they commented on the venue change with something along the lines of, "this show was supposed to be at bowery, now it's here - and we don't care. it was also supposed to be for charity, and now it's not..."
anyway, i interviewed aaron last week for the villager. you can read that here.
recently a friend explained to me that the lyrics from their song city middle:
I think I'm like Tennessee Williams
I wait for the click
I wait, but it doesn't kick in
...is a reference to "cat on a hot tin roof" in which the character brick pollitt (at right played by paul newman) says he wants to drink til he feels the click. after a long weekend of drinking, i thought it was kind of sad that i knew what that meant. knew what that felt like. but i won't overthink that.
there was no way i was feeling that kind of click sunday night anyway, with bud lights costing NINE DOLLARS. and i can get that same feeling from music.

i was recently given a new macbook AND a pink razr phone, so it's sort of hard to believe i would actually "need" anything else. but i do. i need you. no, not you -- you, to the left. yeah, you. because aside from a job and an apartment, i am also currently looking for people. more specifically:
1. someone to write about fine arts for gothamist. do you go to a lot of exhibits and museums around the city? do you want to write about it? then email me.
2. someone to play drums in a really great band. do you play drums? are you looking for a pretty established band to join? then email me.
that's it!

i rarely take naps. this weekend i took two. why? because last week was filled with 4am's, bands, drinks and little sleep. nevertheless, i dragged myself to the delancey friday night even though my body begged me to stay in, place cucumbers over my eyes and act my age.
i was there to see pela, however when i ran in to my friend greg on the street on my walk over, he told me that "norah jones' punk band" was playing after them. so my bed time just went from 11pm to 12am, because there was no way i was missing that. (actual bed time friday night: 4am)
pela was good. i don't like detailing sound here, but they were pretty solid - nothing mind blowing. the singer was energetic and emotional and they were quite enjoyable to listen to for a bit. you can read about no jo's band, el mad mo, here. they were incredibly un-punk but way better than the grammy winners usual stuff. and since pretty much every blogger was out to see pela, and they played right after pela...every blogger blogged about them...and as a result they took most of their website down, including links to music.
saturday i headed over to mercury lounge around 10pm to hang out with the ghostland boys before they took the stage at midnight. and when they did take the stage...the room was packed! sweaty, dancey and totally awesome. eventually i became too tired, sat down on the side of the stage, took some pictures and wondered how GLO got to be that awesome. next thing i knew it was about 3am and i was leaving an almost empty venue. aaron and thomas were off to procure some steak and eggs and i was off to reunite with my bed.
of course, how can anyone sleep when this song is stuck in their head?:

ps: you're probably going to want to buy tickets ahead of time for the tuesday show.
