last night i went to sleep thinking of ways to get the hotel chelsea to let me have a permanant room there for a year, 6 months, a few months, one month...anything really. my thoughts were undoubtedly spurred on by my post on gothamist about the place, my long time infatuation/fascination with the hotel, as well as the aforementioned issues with my upcoming living situation (ie: i need a place to live and/or a new roommate in this city starting july 1st!)
i couldn't really think of any ways to let them let me stay there for free. i am no leonard cohen. no arthur miller. no nico. this is not the 60's. these are no beat times. however, while reading the hotel's blog today (times they are a changin') i had a new plan after seeing a post about a house for sale. that's right, if this city ends up tossing me out...i can buy william s. burroughs old house! sure, i'd have to live in kansas...but the house is for sale and includes his book collection! i could peacefully live on a lake, sip tea on a porch and read old books for the rest of my life. besides, it's going for the reasonable price of $159,950.00 right now on ebay. that's cheap! however, if i had that money i could also spend it on rent here for the next 11 years. these are decisions...

UPDATE: the hotel chelsea responds
Burrough's place looks like just the sort of place I would like to retire to, except that it is in America.

Jen, have you not seen the blog "oneredpaperclip" ??? The guy traded that for a pen, then the pen for a doorknob, then that for an old crappy stove, that for a generator, that for a keg and a neon sign, then that for an old snowmobile, etc. etc...and now he just traded to live in Phoenix for one year for free!
