karen: i think you should start a feature on your blog, "Ask Daily Refill" and your first question can be "Why are there so many bands now that have Wolf or Wolves in their name? What's up with that?"
jendcarlson: hahaaaa
karen: really. it's a legitimate question that i want answered! i need your or jeff or catherine's expertise on this one
jendcarlson: okay, i'll post it for you
karen: thanks. a primer on wolves in current indie rock music
karen: a reason for the themes
karen: the leitmotif if you will
jendcarlson: i'll just post this IM
karen: okay. correct my typos
jendcarlson: no way
jeff is the only one who had any insight in to this, stating:
"They're scary but beautiful...conjure up images of snow, forests, lonely howls...things a band might want to associate with. I'm sure there are lots of mythological background reasons, too."
i think if we were discussing penguins i'd have more insight. as it is, all i have to offer you is this cute photo of two wolves nuzzling.
Also, maybe because wolves are preceived as a threat, but never really threaten anyone...that image of being sleek and hard on the outside with the looming truth of ol' softy on the inside.
Ok, maybe that's a bit too much...heh

I just thought it's 'cause they're all trying to rip off Wolfsheim.

i thought it was cause of the 80s trend of wearing big animal print white sweatshirts or tshirts w/a unicorn on em, what i mean is wolves are used in this same way, tho it's a little weird so many bands would subscribe to my way of thinking, which isn't making much sense right now.

My guess is that they are not creative enough to come up with another name. If "Wolf" is the hot word then the kids will come see it. Look at the success of Castle Wolfenstein! Coincidence.......?
