by the end of last week i seemed to have hit my level for exhaustion. passing my list spots off to catherine - i missed the cyhsy/national show on friday (leaving my flickr calendar blank for the 9th). instead i stayed home, watched arcade fire with bowie on fashion rocks and passed out. saturday night i drank chamomile tea and watched nouvelle vague at joe's pub, totally worth leaving the apartment for.
as for cmj this week, i am not going to overextend myself, i see a lot of bands on any given week, cmj isn't really that different. yesterday i decided to go through the stack of cd's taking up valuable space in my room to see if there were any bands i wanted to check out this week that weren't on my radar. i didn't really find anything, so aside from the obvious (arcade fire) here are some bands i'm going to make an effort to see...either for the first time, or again...(this is not a schedule):
friday_night_saturday_morning.mp3 - nouvelle vague [cmj: canal room, wednesday 1045pm]
music_is_happiness.mp3 - the octopus project [cmj: rothko, wednesday 945pm]
lots of mp3's here, i suggest listening to nothing to you - two gallants [cmj: cake shop, wednesday sometime between 1am and 4am // bowery, friday 725pm]
i loved this band when i saw them in april.
bang_theory.mp3
- world leader pretend [cmj: sin-e, thursday 930pm]
go see this band. i love their live show, as well as their entire cd. recently i got an email from matt, the guitarist, saying that they'll be playing this show on borrowed gear. when they're done they'll head back to new orleans to see what is left of their homes and to start rebuilding their lives. go see them. give them hugs.
wraith_pinned_to_the_mist_and_other_games.mp3
- of montreal [cmj: the knitting factory, thursday 1am]
i interviewed these guys for gothamist, check it out.
throw_it_on_a_fire.mp3 - belle orchestre [cmj: summerstage, thursday opening for arcade fire]
a_hundred_million_feathers_weight.mp3
- tangiers [cmj: cbgb, saturday 10pm]
the following two artists are from the pile of cd's, i liked them, but alas - they aren't playing at cmj...
distant_demands.mp3
- the strugglers [sounds like if eddie vedder joined a folk/alt country band]
a_love_song_for_annie_hall.mp3
- hartley goldstein [non cmj: sunday residencey at pianos in october]

Not sure if you're taking recommendations for CMJ, but in case you are... seeing this band last month in Cincinnati was a completely moving experience that I can't begin to put into words.

On the recommendation front, I don't have any.
But I do have a list of all the free shows taking place during the duration of CMJ. Save some money, visit my site: www.wordsnrhymes.com.
