karen commented on that last post (you actually read the whole thing?!) about who's death mattered more: kurt cobain or jerry garcia?
i think they both probably caused the same amount of pain in people, but their deaths were completely different. one was 27, the other 53. sure, 53 is still pretty young, but it wasn't very shocking when garcia died - he lived a long, and for the most part, unhealthy life. but i think karen meant which mattered most to me.
i was personally more affected by cobain's death. i cried, a lot, over it. maybe because it confused me more. maybe because it was one more 27 year old death [note: shannon hoon is missing from that list]. maybe because i felt i related to him and his music more. maybe because, at the time, i felt it was a defining moment for "my generation". maybe it was.
there is still a feeling about that day that is with me. that day stuck with us i think. that's why, during the flashback in six feet under to the day cobain died - we probably all felt a very familiar connection to that scene. here were my comments on the 10 year anniversary of cobain's death.
the ny times wrote about nirvana's presence in the six feet under episode as well:
...the episode took its title, "All Alone," from a lyric to the Nirvana song "All Apologies," which could be heard twice as Claire reflected on her brother. The first time, the music came with a memory: Nate in 1994, stoned, weeping at the suicide of Kurt Cobain, whom he called "too pure for this world."
Shannon Hoon actually died when he was 28, not 27:
b. September 26, 1967
d. October 21, 1995

I saw the picture of Kurt and my mind went immediately to the last episode of Six Feet Under.
I miss Nate.
