life aquatic

this weekend i was commited to spending more than five minutes at home and getting my life organized. so come sunday evening i decided it was really time to sit down and focus. all day i kept getting sucked in to shark week on the discovery channel, but once "the last secrets of the titanic" came on, i knew it was over. of course, i found other ways to get distracted.

greg the b/f: did you have a good weekend?
jendcarlson: i kept getting sucked in to "shark week" shows on discovery today
greg the b/f: ME TOO! OMG, i've seen so much shark shit
jendcarlson: everyone gets their legs bitten off. it was just show after show with someone else losing a leg
greg the b/f: yeah.  We should do a drinking game where you take a shot anytime anyone loses a leg
greg the b/f: I liked "American Sharks" the best though
jendcarlson: oh, they had shark icons that were red white and blue!
greg the b/f: I am now totally scared of Florida
jendcarlson: i love sharks
greg the b/f: me too
Beachjen_1jendcarlson: i always tried to find them in montauk when i was little. after seeing jaws.
jendcarlson: but i kept getting stung by jellyfish
jendcarlson: but i KNEW there were sharks b/c i'd see them hanging on the docks
greg the b/f: maybe they were farther out
jendcarlson: we were always pretty far out, on a boat that always broke down
jendcarlson: and we'd have to wait for a tug boat every single time we went out on it
jendcarlson: so i'd go shark huntin'
greg the b/f: did you have any weapons?
jendcarlson: no
greg the b/f: How old were you?
jendcarlson: whenever the jaws movies were coming out. i don't know. i went to montauk every summer for like 16 summers
jendcarlson: i was little
greg the b/f: and you weren't scared of getting eaten like the rest of us kids?
jendcarlson: i remember being scared when the boat would break, but not of sharks - i just thought i'd have to live on that boat with like 8 people for the rest of my life. with sharks though, i probably thought i was smarter b/c i'd seen how poorly the kids that got eaten reacted in the movies
jendcarlson: for instance, i wasn't about to go out on one of those banana boats
greg the b/f: no no, banana boats are a death trap
greg the b/f: its too tasty looking for a shark to resist
greg the b/f: and has food from TWO major food groups

yes, that adorable child up there is me. and i think they sell those terrycloth shorts jumpers at american apparel now. anyway, i recently just saw a life aquatic for the first time despite the fact that it came out ages ago. i didn't love it as much as wes anderson's previous films...but i LOVED the jaguar shark sequence at the end. this takes the magic out of it, but here's how it was made.

is it asking too much to one day be able to listen to staralfur while in a contained unit just a few feet away from a bigger-than-life mythical glowing shark?
