last friday morning i took off to austin for some bands, parties, warm weather and free red stripe. i was resting my head at ben's house while i was in town which meant the first party on the agenda was the internationally acclaimed, dubbed best party of sxsw, unofficial spin magazine/stolen transmission/addvice/wayward boys extravaganza.
after a day of travel, helping a bit to clean the house and do errands (such as picking up 80-something cases of sparks and red stripe) i sat down during the calm before the storm for a glass of wine...then a second glass...and was promptly tipsy due to the lack of dinner in my tummy. i blame those factors for the fact that i fell asleep at about 3am, although it's most likely because i'm too old to party until sunrise anymore. AND I'M OKAY WITH THAT. so my eyes closed to the sounds of someone's deejay set (sarah, elhaam, bloc party?), more specifically as they played arcade fire. the last words i heard were "sleeping is giving in...no matter what the time is." my heavy eyelids prevented me from seeing things like britt daniel in close proximity to the hot tub, the vice guys partaking in vice-like activities in the backyard and some of bloc party. what i did see before sweet sweet slumber was a bunch of great bands playing in the living room and backyard. maximo park, idlewild, mc chris, fractious, the prix. i also had the pleasure of meeting a few incredibly annoying girls from new york who made me wish i wasn't from new york ("we know famous people! we like coke! we have the intellectual capacity to speak at an eighth grade level!") it was amazing how easy it was to tell the new yorkers from everyone else. WE ARE VERY SELF IMPORTANT and kind of annoying.
i digress. so, i had a chance to catch maximo park at the sxsw pep rally just before austin and wasn't that impressed. yes, they sounded a bit like the futureheads and were good...but nothing new or exciting. however after seeing them twice at sxsw their songs are now stuck in my head. and they aren't likely to come out any time soon. listen to the coast is always changing eighteen times in a row and you'll know what i'm talking about.
